What are the primary employment options for hospitalists?

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, March 25, 2008

Although numerous employment options exist for hospitalists, most fall into three employment categories. In general, hospitalists:

  • Are directly employed by the hospital. In this case, the hospital ideally negotiates the hospitalists' salary and incentives based on how effective the hospital expects them to be. In this model, a senior medical officer or operational leader is often held accountable for the hospitalists' performance.
  • Are employed by an existing private practice. In this case, the hospital contracts with a private practice group for defined services but the hospitalists' salary is paid by the practice group.
  • Own their own practice group and contract with the hospital. Although practical experience has not yet proven this model to be the most effective, it does appropriately base hospitalists' salary and incentives on individual performance.
