Massachusetts plans to ban gifts from pharmaceutical industry

Therese Murray, senate president, proposed a ban on all gifts from the pharmaceutical industry to Massachusetts physicians, according to The Boston Globe. Massachusetts already prohibits gifts to legislators and other public officials, but the proposed ban would make it the first state to ban all gifts outright. Gifts include payments, entertainment, meals, travel, honorariums, subscriptions, and pens and other accessories with the drugs' logo on them. However, pharmaceutical companies would still be permitted to distribute drug samples to physicians. Anyone found violating the ban could be fined $5,000 and/or face two years in prison.
