Nurse accused of spreading hepatitis C

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, March 18, 2008

A nurse at a Texas military hospital has given hospitalists and other healthcare workers all the more reason to report suspicious behavior. According to the Los Angeles Times, the nurse allegedly infected at least 15 people with a potentially deadly strain of hepatitis C when he injected drugs meant for his patients into his own body, and then used the same needle to inject his patients.

The nurse had been stealing fentanyl, a powerful painkilling drug. All victims were members of the military or their immediate family members and are presumed to have been infected in 2004. Among the victims was an infant that investigators believe was infected in utero. Indictment charges were filed against the nurse earlier this week.
