Online portal now available to help physicians adopt e-prescribing
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, March 11, 2008
On March 4, five of the leading physician groups in the United States launched an online portal designed to help more physicians send prescriptions to pharmacies electronically. The American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Medical Group Management Association are sponsoring the Web site, www.GetRxConnected.com.
The Web site aims to help physicians transition to e-prescribing. It estimates that 150,000 prescribers in the U.S. currently use electronic medical records or other clinical software to fax prescriptions to pharmacies. The Center for Improving Medical Management, which endorses the program, has deemed e-prescribing as a more accurate and efficient means of prescribing medications than paper or faxed prescriptions, and the Institute of Medicine has called for all prescriptions in the U.S. to be written and received electronically by 2010.
