CA hospital under investigation for wrong-site surgery

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, March 4, 2008

The Los Angeles Times reports that the state of California is investigating a wrong-site surgery performed on February 15 at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange. Surgeons performing knee-repair surgery allegedly operated on the wrong knee. This marks the third wrong-site procedure to occur at St. Joseph Hospital since January 2006. The hospital performs about 25,000 surgeries annually.

The other two wrong site surgeries involved an incision made on the wrong site of a patient's head that occurred in January 2006 and an ear tube inserted in the wrong ear of a patient in June of 2007.

The investigation comes at a time when hospitals are already under fire to prevent surgical errors. After October 1, for example, Medicare will no longer pay for the additional costs of certain preventable conditions. In addition, health insurance company Aetna requires hospitals to not only waive patient bills when certain medical mistakes occur, but also apologize to patients and families affected by those mistakes.
