Hospitalist effectiveness studies change focus

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, December 26, 2007

In a December 20 editorial published in The New England Journal of Medicine, Laurence F. McMahon, Jr, MD, MPH, calls for a shift in focus for studies aimed at measuring the effectiveness of hospitalist programs.

McMahon states in the editorial that studies of the hospitalist practice should no longer investigate costs and compare outcomes with those of other providers but instead focus on "quality improvement, comparative effectiveness, clinical informatics, the safety of patients, and the translation of new medical advances to clinical practice."
