Plan early to retain staff

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, November 21, 2007

One of the reasons hospitalist programs may fail is due to an inability to retain quality physicians. In many cases, hospitalists leave programs because they feel they are overworked, underpaid, or both. In the November issue of HMA, experts offered tips to combat this trend, which can begin with a retention process during a hospitalist candidate's first interview.

Most physicians who leave their organization do so during the first five years, and often the decision to leave occurs within the first three to five months of employment. To aid in retention, hospitals must employ solid planning and scheduling practices. You should also develop a strategic plan and timeline to allow for growth and concomitant adjustments in the practice structure.
