An unhealthy trend

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, November 14, 2007

The future of physician services could be heading for a path of higher spending and declining access to care for lower-income people, according to an article by Center for Studying Health System Change (HSC) researchers in the November/December Health Affairs.

Researchers attribute these changes to a number of factors, including physicians moving into larger practices and loosening affiliations with general hospitals; providing more ancillary services; investing in enterprises that compete with hospitals for outpatients, and a payment system that has not evolved to support changes in practice.
