Does your hospitalist program have the right staffing, scheduling, and planning it takes to succeed?

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, November 14, 2007

Developing a hospitalist schedule is a unique process for each program. It is based on the organization's objectives and mission, financial resources, and staffing availability. Successful programs each typically develop a strategic plan and timeline to allow for controlled growth and concomitant adjustments in the practice structure.

A hospitalist program should first establish its objectives and mission by evaluating:

  • Community needs
  • Organization's overall mission
  • Medical staff resources and desires
  • Healthcare competition
  • Customer base

You should also consider stabilizing the primary care and specialty referral network. Once these objectives and the mission are defined, the program should delineate the scope of deliverable services. The hospitalist structure and schedule can then be altered to accommodate the program at each stage of implementation.
