Residents sue Illinois over care options

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, September 6, 2007

Five disabled nursing home residents in Chicago are suing the state, claiming they weren't provided with sufficient resources so they could stay at home instead of moving into a nursing home, reported the Chicago Tribune. The suit claims that the disabled are forced into nursing homes because state funding doesn't allocate enough money for home- and community-care alternatives. Residents are asking the state to accurately assess during nursing home admissions whether residents really need to be in nursing homes. If home care is an option, the suit also requests that the state provide adequate funding, reported the Tribune.
