LA Supreme Court: Blanco must testify in St. Rita’s case
Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, August 30, 2007
Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco's request to be exempt from testifying in the St. Rita's case has been denied by the Louisiana Supreme Court, reported the New Orleans Times-Picayune. On trial are St. Rita's owners Salvador and Mabel Mangano, charged with negligent homicide following the deaths of 35 SNF residents during Hurricane Katrina. St. Rita's did not evacuate, and the Manganos are expected to argue that the state and federal government should be held accountable for failures in emergency preparedness.
Recently, a state judge ruled that evidence and testimony from three other SNFs in St. Bernard Parish can be allowed during the trial. Testimony by other St. Bernard Parish SNF directors began this week, according to the Times-Picayune, which is following the trial on its breaking news Web log at http://www.nola.com/newslogs/breakingtp/.
