Katrina neglect case heats up in New Orleans
Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, July 19, 2007
The case of Salvador and Mabel Mangano of St. Rita's Nursing Home in New Orleans saw a break for the defendants last week. The Manganos, on trial for their alleged fault in the deaths of 35 residents during Hurricane Katrina, will be allowed to present evidence that the government's negligence, not their own, was to blame for the deaths, according to TV station KATC-3. The Manganos contended that there is no way they could have known about the potential for flooding based on the area's faulty levees. The state's case against the Manganos alleged that St. Rita's should have been evacuated in advance, as many other area nursing homes were. The trial begins on August 13, and each of the 35 counts could equal five years in prison and a $5,000 fine, according to KATC-3.
