CMS affirms canopy, sprinkler, and fire safety requirements
Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, July 19, 2007
Most canopies and large overhangs in nursing homes must have sprinklers, at least in facilities where sprinklers are required. That's according to CMS' "Clarification of Life Safety Code Issues in Nursing Homes," otherwise known as Survey & Certification Letter 05-38. SNFs should also use the Fire Safety Evaluation System (FSES) when evaluating safety levels for canopies and overhangs that require sprinklers. SNFs may use the FSES until CMS requires their facility to be fully sprinklered.
