This week's tip: Detecting acute delirium

Acute delirium is characterized by changes in behavior, reduced awareness of the environment, and disorientation. If a CNA suspects that a patient is suffering from acute delirium, the patient would exhibit at least two of the following:

  • Memory impairment
  • Reduced or fluctuating levels of consciousness
  • Perceptual disturbances, including misinterpretations, hallucinations, and illusions
  • Change in psychomotor activity
  • Insomnia and disturbance of sleep-wake cycle
