Study: Part D still a navigational mess

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, June 21, 2007

While the successes of the Medicare Part D prescription drug program have been documented, researchers suggest the complex regulation does as much harm as good, according to a study in the June 20 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The study states that doctors don't often take the time to look up what drugs are covered by individual patients' Part D plans. Thus, 12% of patients reported to the researchers that they left pharmacies empty-handed, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. A recent survey of U.S. doctors cited in the study stated 59% of patients overall, including those in long-term care settings, had had trouble getting Part D prescriptions filled.
