Study: Better diabetes care needed for SNFs
Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, June 7, 2007
Researchers at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine concluded last week that treatment of U.S. nursing home residents with type 1 and type 2 diabetes frequently falls short of American Diabetes Association care standards. The Ohio team studied quality of care in residents living in nursing homes in Ohio and West Virginia, YahooNews reported. Their findings state that only 38% of residents met their blood glucose goals, 55% had satisfactory blood levels, and 31% had annual lipid checks.
These three areas, the study mentioned, considerably affect the life expectancy for diabetics. Researchers stated they would use a follow-up study to examine treatment protocols for diabetics in the nursing home setting, YahooNews reported.
