Do big chains suffer from standardization?

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, May 24, 2007

A study by the University of Michigan School of Public Health suggested long-term care facilities are hurt by the standardization practices of big chain operations. Large chains such as Sunrise Senior Living and Brookdale Senior Living, Inc., dominate the facility landscape. And research concluded that standardization in corporate administration hurt resident care, even though standardization among big chains was seen to improve the clinical aspect of resident care, according to the news organization Huliq.com. The study was part of a broader focus funded by Blue Cross Blue Shield, examining how nursing home chains vary in their approaches to care.
