Tip of the Week: How to hang on to good employees

Retaining CNAs is difficult for almost any facility. And with ever-dwindling resources, facilities need to be creative when it comes to finding and keeping good employees. John Sauer, executive director of the Wisconsin Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, provides the following suggestions on incentive programs as alternatives to raises:

  • Free immunizations and screenings
  • Flexible scheduling
  • Tuition assistance
  • Staff and family picnics, potlucks, and bake sales
  • Dress-down Fridays
  • Allow staff to choose uniforms
  • Publish thank you notes from residents and families
