CMS posts new NPI explanations

Although CMS announced a delay in enforcing the National Provider Identifier (NPI) standard, that does not mean that nursing homes and other providers have an extra year to obtain and use the new identifier, according to a new frequently asked questions (FAQ) document on the CMS Web site.
"Providers that have not yet obtained NPIs, should do so immediately. . . Failure to obtain an NPI may be viewed as a violation of the good faith provisions of CMS' contingency guidance," the agency stated in the FAQ.
CMS has also posted the following additional FAQs relating to the contingency plan:
