Second death in a week for beleaguered Illinois SNF

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, April 12, 2007

An East Peoria, IL, nursing home already under investigation for one resident death was stunned Monday night with news of a second, reported Moline-based WQAD news. The Peoria County Coroner said a 72-year-old resident was sitting in a wheelchair Monday when he became unresponsive, and was later found to have choked on a doughnut. Peoria Police Chief Ed Papis told WQAD there is no investigation into the resident's death, but an investigation is continuing into the case of an 81-year-old resident who died of brain trauma over the weekend. The facility was also raided late last week and found to have a number of residents and workers with outstanding criminal warrants.  The nursing home's administrator told authorities the facility adheres to health department guidelines, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
