Medicaid stop in ALF chain latest in trend

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, April 12, 2007

Officials at Assisted Living Concepts in Fremont, NE, told 26 residents that they would have to move out by June 30 because the facility is no longer accepting Medicaid. "At this point, the Medicaid program pays less than it costs to take care of folks," president and COO of the facility Laurie Bebo told the Sioux City Journal. Assisted Living Concepts, which is based in Milwaukee, runs 207 facilities in 17 states, with 8,300 units in total. The decision to drop Medicaid residents will affect all of its facilities, the Journal reported. As Congress begins to debate its budget for fiscal year 2008, the fight for preservation of Medicare and Medicaid funds promises to heat up.
