Hostage situation at Dallas SNF ends safely

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, April 5, 2007

A fired nursing home employee of a SNF outside of Dallas returned to his former workplace Tuesday afternoon. He allegedly wielded a handgun and took four hostages before surrendering to police three hours later, according to the Associated Press (AP). The ex-employee, Ernie Smith, arrived at Castle Manor nursing home in the Dallas suburb of Garland, and held four hostages at gunpoint. He released the first after negotiating with members of a SWAT team, and then was talked into surrendering entirely a few hours later, the AP reported. Another nursing home employee told the Dallas Morning News that Smith had been on the job three months and "seemed to be a nice guy."
