More financial assistance yields better results for low income residents

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, March 8, 2007

If low income nursing home residents could receive financial help from their caregivers they would have a better chance of being enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan that best covers their medications, according to a study by the Long Term Care Pharmacy Alliance (LTCPA). The study was a state-by-state analysis of low income nursing home residents enrolled in the Medicare Part D program. It concluded that those low income residents who are enrolled in a "below benchmark" drug plan as part of the program's dual eligibility are faced with access restrictions to certain medications. There are several below-benchmark cost plans residents can enroll in and each varies in drug coverage, according to the LTCPA.
