Tip of the week: Survey your staff to evaluate productivity
Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, January 3, 2008
A productive approach to identify operational deficiencies is to solicit staff input. Review the following 10 questions:
- What made you upset today?
- What took too long to complete?
- What caused complaints today?
- What was misunderstood today?
- What cost too much?
- What was wasted?
- What was too complicated?
- What was just plain silly?
- What job involved too many people?
- What job involved too many actions?
Remember not to ask all the questions at once. Select one or two questions to ask during a group or department meeting. Maintain a list of the responses and the names of individuals who offer comments. Group the most common responses together; the frequency of a response may point to the most pressing issue.
