CMS automates therapy caps exceptions process
Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, January 3, 2007
With CMS' release of Transmittal 1145, nursing homes will lose their ability to use the manual exceptions process for the Medicare Part B therapy caps, making all exceptions automatic going forward. To make this feasible for SNFs and other rehab providers, CMS added to its list of ICD-9 codes that allow for an automatic exception and clarified how to use complexities to justify an automatic exception from the $1,780 caps. The transmittal was effective January 1, 2007, and must be implemented by January 29, 2007. To view Transmittal 1145 and to see the updated list of ICD-9 codes and complexities that justify an automatic exception, go to www.hcpro.com/content/65810.cfm.
