Noroviruses are spreading like wildfire
Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, December 27, 2006
The norovirus is attacking nursing homes across the country, debilitating both residents and staff. Those inflicted with the gastrointestinal virus experience severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea over a 24-48 hour period, reported the Burlington Free Press. The highly contagious virus is forcing nursing homes to isolate its residents and enforce restrictions on visitations. A Michigan nursing home imposed a quarantine after more than 70 residents became sick, reported the Kalamazoo Gazette. Visitors to a nursing home in Montana, where more than 20 residents and staff are sick, are required to wash their hands and use hand sanitizers each time they enter the building, reported the Web site www.billingsgazette.com.
