CNAs can help residents with a variety of range-of-motion exercises. Depending on a resident's condition, he or she can perform the exercise alone, with minimal help, or with complete dependency on the CNA. To help a resident improve shoulder flexibility and circulation, for example, perform the following maneuvers on him or her:

  • Raise arm forward and upward as far as possible and lower to side
  • Raise arm to side as far as possible and lower again
  • Move arm backward as far as possible and return to side
  • With arm at shoulder height and elbow bent, raise and lower forearm
  • With arm straight out at shoulder level, move entire arm forward and backward
  • With arms at side, raise and lower each shoulder
