Residents usually feel better when they are well groomed, and a daily shave for men is an important part of grooming. CNAs can help male residents keep up their appearances with the following steps to proper shaving:

  • Check with your immediate supervisor for specific instructions
  • Wash your hands
  • Assemble the equipment and bring to bedside
  • Identify the resident and make introductions
  • Provide privacy for the resident
  • Elevate the bed to a comfortable working height
  • Provide good lighting
  • Make sure if the resident wears dentures he has them in his mouth
  • Place a towel under the resident's chin and across his chest
  • Apply preshave lotion if the resident requests it
  • Hold the resident's skin taut with one hand and shave in the direction of the hair growth
  • Apply aftershave or moisturizing lotion
  • Remove the towel from under the resident's chin and across his chest
  • Lower the bed to its original position
  • Clean the razor
  • Wash your hands
