New flu and pneumonia quality measures come out

October 13, 2006, CMS released four new flu and pneumococcal quality measures for both chronic and postacute care residents. The target period of Minimum Data Set selection for the flu shot measures covers October 1, 2005, to March 31, 2006, a CMS official said during the agency's SNF/Long-Term Care Open Door Forum. The current reporting period for pneumococcal vaccinations is January 1, 2006, to June 30, 2006. The following are CMS' new quality measures:
- The percentage of eligible and willing chronic care residents who were vaccinated for the 2005-2006 flu season
- The percentage of eligible and willing postacute care residents who were vaccinated for the 2005-2006 flu season
- The percentage of eligible and willing chronic care residents with an up-to-date pneumococcal vaccination
- The percentage of eligible and willing postacute care residents with an up-to-date pneumococcal vaccination
