Study finds drugs aren't helping residents with Alzheimer's disease

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, October 25, 2006

A study found that antipsychotic drugs prescribed to residents with restive Alzheimer's disease typically do not improve their condition, reported The New York Times. The study tested three antipsychotic drugs and one placebo between 2001 and 2005. The researchers administered the drugs to 421 participants and found there wasn't a statistically significant difference between the placebo and the three drugs, the Times reported. Researchers fear this discovery could cause insurers to shy away from paying for these costly medications.
