Physicians struggle to get medications under Part D

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, October 16, 2006

Physicians caring for nursing home residents still have difficulty obtaining appropriate medications under Medicare Part D because of necessary drug authorization requirements. This is according to a survey conducted by the American Medical Directors Association (AMDA), an AMDA press release. Residents are receiving their medications late, receiving ineffective medications, or aren't receiving the drugs at all. Physicians surveyed said they have problems obtaining certain types of drugs, such as medications for dementia, medications to treat and prevent ulcers, pain medications, and anemia medications, the release stated.
