Many RNs face union exemption

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, October 6, 2006

In an October 3, 2006 ruling by the National Labor Relations Board, registered nurse with supervisory duties-including those in SNFs-are exempt from union membership, reported The New York Times. It's estimated that the board's 3-to-2 ruling could affect more than eight million workers. A supervisor position is defined as overseeing another employee and having accountability for subordinates, which included most charge nurses. It does not include duties such as hiring, promoting, or laying off employees, the Times reported.
