The long-term outlook for heart attack victims depends on the severity of the attack and the preventive measures that are taken following the attack. CNA's can help residents who have suffered a heart attack recuperate with the following steps:

  • Make sure the resident slowly progresses from bed to chair rest
  • Assist the resident in passive exercises, such as reading and other nonstressful activities
  • Gradually build up the resident's endurance and assist him or her in walking
  • Increase the resident's activity level after three to six weeks
  • Look for shortness of breath and any signs of pain
