Congress urged to waive Medicare Part D premium penalty

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, September 19, 2006

On September 13, the National Council on Aging (NCOA), along with 46 additional national advocacy organizations, urged Congress to pass legislation to waive the late enrollment premium penalty for the Medicare Part D prescription drug plan. The penalty affects seniors who missed the May 15 deadline. Currently, nursing home residents and seniors should expect to pay a 7% monthly penalty for the rest of their lives if they enroll in Part D during the open enrollment in either November or December 2006. NCOA said the bill proposed that state health insurance assistance programs and area agencies on aging receive $18 million towards outreach and enrollment funding for Part D.
