There are five common types of abuse: physical, sexual, psychological or emotional, financial, and neglect. Each form has different symptoms that are considered abusive.

Neglect is a form of abuse that occurs when the caregiver fails to provide necessities due to a lack of skill, information, or interest. It can be intentional or unintentional. Remind CNAs to look for the following signs when determining if a resident is suffering from neglect:

  • Malnourishment
  • Weight loss
  • Isolation
  • Dirty or inappropriate clothing
  • Lack of dentures, glasses, and/or hearing aids when they are needed
