Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, September 12, 2006

Metlife conducted a study on nursing homes' increase in cost of living from 2004 to 2005. The study looked at 943 licensed nursing homes that offered a private pay rate and provided skilled care. The average daily rate for a private room was $203 or $74,095 annually. This was a 5.7% increase from 2004's rate of $192. The average daily rate for a semiprivate room was $176 or $64,240 annually, which was a 4.1% increase since 2004, the study stated. These rates include skilled care, assistance with activities of daily living, room, and three meals per day. Medications, specialized therapy, and hairdressing are not included in these rates, the study reported.
