Some residents need only minor assistance with early morning care such as giving them the equipment they need. For others, because of weakness, trembling hands, poor eyesight, or confusion, CNAs need to do more to help.

In addition to making the start of the day more pleasant, these early morning procedures also accomplish important hygiene measures. Early morning care also encourages continence, keeps the mouth healthy, and eliminates unpleasant odors. Remember to wash your hands before helping the resident. Here are some procedures in assisting with early morning care:

  • Greet the resident
  • Put on gloves
  • Offer bedpan or urinal or assist to bathroom
  • Provide peri-care if necessary
  • Provide or assist with oral care
  • Brush the resident's hair
  • Change linens and gown, if soiled
  • Leave area neat and clean
  • Remove gloves
