Green Houses bring new life to nursing homes

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, August 29, 2006

In August, the Presbyterian Villages of Michigan's (PVM) Redford campus opened its first Green House. This approach to elder care gives residents a 24-hour care social environment in a home-like setting. The Green House Project, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is a project of the NCB Development Corporation, according to a PVM press release. Residents live in private rooms each with its own bathroom, clustered in groups of 10 with a common living area. Residents make decisions regarding when they wake up, what they eat, and when they eat it. The first Green House opened in 2004 and all accept Medicare, Medicaid, and private payments, PVM reported in a press release.
