Did you know that roughly 10% of the general population has some degree of hearing loss? In people over the age of 65, the occurrence of hearing loss is about 25%. Keep in mind, not all instances of hearing loss can be prevented. Fortunately for many residents, CNAs can use the following prevention steps to minimize the risk of hearing loss:
- Reduce the resident's exposure to excessive noise.
- Clean the ears to remove any wax buildup.
- Monitor the resident's medication. Some drugs cause ringing in the ear and temporary hearing problems.
- Treat ear infections immediately.
