Massachusetts bill opens up long-term care choices

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, August 22, 2006

In Massachusetts, a new bill was passed last week giving long-term care residents more say in where they receive care, reported The Sharon (M.A.) Advocate. The bill, "An Act Regarding Choice of Long Term Care Setting," allows those needing long-term care to stay at home and have Medicaid pay for their home health services. The newspaper reported this bill is expected to save the state $134 million over the next five years because it projects home care as costing less than nursing home care. To house long-term care residents in nursing homes, MassHealth annually pays approximately $51,720 per member.
