Physicians Face Cuts in Medicare Payments

In 2007, physicians may face a 5.1% cut in Medicare payments for services provided to elderly and disabled patients, the New York Times reported.

he Bush administration proposed this cut on August 8 because spending on doctors' services was increasing faster than expected, the newspaper reported. A CMS official told the Times that in 2007 the premium would rise 11% over this year to $98.40. Medicare insures more than 42 million people. Around 875,000 physicians and other healthcare professionals will receive an estimated $61.5 billion from the program in 2007.
