Nursing care following radiation and chemotherapy is directed to the side effects of those treatments. Treatment side effects commonly include weakness, fatigue, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, anemia, and diarrhea.  Below are suggestions for curbing some treatment side effects:

  • Administer prescribed medications with frequent small meals and fluids.
  • Help alleviate burning sensations in the mouth with mouth care and  dietary changes.
  • Encourage sleep with relaxation exercises, warm milk, reducing noise, and back rubs.
  • Communicate with the resident and monitor their pain levels to determine the cause of the discomfort and ultimately relieve it.
