A hiatal hernia is usually not surgically repaired in adults unless there is danger that it will become strangulated. Treatment consists of managing the symptoms rather than repairing the hernia.

CNAs can use the following measures to prevent the reflux, indigestion, and heartburn that often accompany hiatal hernias:

* Elevate the head of the bed six inches to prevent the reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus

* Avoid foods and liquids, such as coffee and alcohol, that stimulate the secretion of acids by the stomach

* Use antacids at mealtimes and bedtime to neutralize gastric acidity

* Order prescription medications, if necessary, to prevent the reflux from occurring
