Whether it's lack of appetite or exercise, illness, modified diets, or cultural habits, some residents who feed themselves may not be ingesting enough food. CNAs can encourage residents to eat more by following this advice:

* Make sure residents have their teeth in place and their glasses on if they use them.

* Remind residents to take another bite.

* Ask residents if there is something about the food that they don't like. If so, arrange for the dietician to talk to them.

* Talk with residents while they eat.

* Don't remove residents' food until you are certain they will not eat any more.

* Do not rush residents or appear to be rushed yourself.
