CNAs need to understand their residents' cultural beliefs and attitudes toward health and sickness to provide them with the best possible care. Knowing about other staff members' cultures is also important for working well together. Misunderstandings can sometimes lead to tragic mistakes.
For example, residents or coworkers from some Asian, Middle Eastern, and Hispanic cultures put value on "not losing face." This means that to avoid embarrassing themselves or you, they may not admit that they do not understand what you have told them. If you say, "Do you understand?" they may say "yes," even if they do not. Because of this cultural trait, you will need to be more careful to make certain the person understands what you are saying.
