CMS is making more of an effort to see that nursing home residents engage in recreational activities. The agency revised guidance on activities to ensure staff offer recreation that is enjoyable to individuals rather than only having group events. CNAs can help meet CMS regulations and improve their facility's resident-centered care by encouraging residents' involvement in activities.
Find out what your residents enjoyed doing before they moved into the nursing home. Tell your activities director what you learn. This will help the director create enjoyable pastimes for each individual.
Do not force residents to do an activity if they do not want to. Instead, explain to them the benefits of participating. For example, gardening may improve their dexterity or joining a painting class may help with social involvement.
