Studies say that residents' psychosocial states affect their physical conditions. Mental stress can make an existing condition worse and even cause unrelated physical symptoms. The reverse is also true, according to studies. Peace of mind can help recovery or reduction of pain.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has taken a growing interest in the psychosocial well-being of nursing home residents with its new guidance requiring facilities to keep residents from having negative pyschosocial outcomes during their stay.

CNAs can help ensure positive outcomes by seeing that residents receive the following five basic needs:

* Give and receive love

* Maintain self esteem

* Receive the approval of others

* Maintain as much independence as possible

* Nourish the inner spirit
