Many residents are in a weakened condition or have a disability that makes it difficult for them to move without help. It is essential that CNAs know and use proper techniques for transferring so they do not hurt themselves or the residents. CNAs should follow these tips when moving residents:

* Keep your back straight and knees bent

* Have enough help

* Tell residents what you will be doing and how they can assist

* Remove any obstacles <li> Avoid twisting movements

* Pull, don't push so that there's less strain on the back

* Adjust the bed to an appropriate height

* Move residents toward their strong side whenever possible

* Use a pull sheet when residents are heavy or cannot assist with the transfer

* Exhale when lifting to reduce pressure on the spinal colum
