CNAs can help quell the long-term damage of lung disease by looking for early warning signs in their residents. If lung disease is caught early enough, it can be treated and sometimes reversed. If CNAs notice any of the following symptoms, they should report them to the residents' physicians as soon as possible:

* Chronic cough

* Shortness of breath or labored breathing

* Chronic mucus production

* Wheezing

* Coughing up blood

* Frequent chest colds
