CNAs must focus on the prevention of phlebitis, the inflammation of a vein, in residents. They should also try to prevent the formation of a thrombus, a blood clot that is attached to the inner wall of a blood vessel, or keep an existing thrombus from becoming larger or dislodged from the wall of the vein.

The following lists treatment options that CNAs should know:

* Primary treatment is bed rest, elevation of the limb, and heat applied to the area

* Residents may wear elastic stockings to prevent future episodes of phlebitis

* Antibiotics may combat the infection

* Anticoagulants, medications that help keep the blood from clotting, may prevent development or enlargement of a thrombus

* If it appears the thrombus might loosen, surgery is an option
